PLANS for a new community centre in Westbury have ‘accelerated’, with the team behind the project hopeful that it could be ready for opening in March.
Building work began last month to transform the former youth centre building on Eden Vale Road into a vibrant community hub, offering space to local groups and organisations.
Negotiations are also taking place to secure new services at the community centre, which could include the return of Westbury’s youth club, which closed in March last year.
Chair of the trustees for the Westbury Community Project Trust, Richard Hatt told White Horse News, “We have started the building work, using all local trades people, so things are accelerating again – and we are looking at a March opening.
“We are nailing groups down to commit to the centre – and working with Westbury’s community engagement manager, Graeme Morrision, we are making good progress.
“We have Westbury Shed who will be using the building, and we have negotiated with a local holiday club to run a pilot after-school sports club, maybe two or three times a week.
“We are talking to Beth Mullins who used to run Westbury Youth Club about running a club on a Wednesday night; and Fairfield Farm College are interested in running the internet cafe for us. And there’s much more in the offing!”
The project for the new community centre, which began in early 2017, reached a milestone moment in September last year with the asset transfer of the building from Wiltshire Council to the charity, allowing the group to take responsibility for the building.
