THE new Mayor of Westbury, cllr Gordon King, will be joined by deputy mayor, cllr Ian Cunningham, after the pair were elected earlier this month.
Councillor King took over from out-going mayor Stephen Andrews at the annual town council meeting on 15th May.
“I am delighted to have been appointed Town Mayor by my fellow councillors,” cllr King said. “To be mayor, to represent the town council and my town is an honour without parallel. It is truly marvellous and I look forward to undertaking my new duties with optimism and good cheer.
“I have initially chosen the Hope Debt Advice Service as my main charity for the year and hope that you will all support my fundraising efforts which will culminate with a Civic Reception on Friday 2nd March 2018.”
Cllr King has been a town councillor for 22 years and was re-elected as a Wiltshire Councillor for Westbury East ward representing the Liberal Democrats earlier this month.
Cllr King served as Mayor in 1999/2000 and was deputy mayor in 2016/2017.
Cllr King added, “Although quorate, the council needs to co-opt up to seven new councillors so that the important work in achieving a host of important objectives, such as a Neighbourhood Plan, might begin. If you live in Westbury and would like to contribute to the success of our town, contact the town clerk on 01373 822232 for more details.
“I look forward to meeting with as many of you as I am able as Mayor over the coming 12 months.”
Cllr Ian Cunningham, who has been a town councillor for five years, was elected as deputy mayor.
Councillor Ian Cunningham said, “It is, of course, a great honour to be selected as Deputy Mayor of Westbury and I look forward to being able to support my colleague, cllr Gordon King, who I am sure will be an excellent Town Mayor.”
