A Westbury director has released a short film revealing the town’s efforts during the Second World War.

John Wheeler used Artificial Intelligence (AI) for the project, which focuses on the war era in Westbury.
John said, “I sourced historical photos, cleaned them up, and then sent them to an AI software called Kling 2.
“I wanted to show what life was like for soldiers in the area and also to tell the wider story of how the Second World War was won.”
John’s film includes scenes of soldiers sitting in briefings at All Saints’ Church, dramatic shots of training exercises on Salisbury Plain, and Air Raid Precautions (ARP) wardens on patrol in Westbury.
It also explores major events such as the Battle of Britain, the sinking of the Pietro Calvi, and VE Day.
The film was produced in collaboration with Westbury Heritage Centre and Museum, where a current exhibition uncovers the wider history of Westbury at war.
John added, “I wanted to give back to the museum as they give so much to the town. History is a gift to us, and the more people that discover our town’s past, the better we understand it.
“The film I’ve made is accessible. I’ve edited it with younger people in mind and how best to bring the information to them. I really do hope people enjoy it and find out more about the Second World War.
“I feel it could give a little pride to the town, as we accomplished so much during that time.”
