WESTBURY Town Council have agreed to fund the installation of new car parking signs to emphasise to shoppers that the local authority is offering two hours of free parking.
At a meeting of the highways, planning and development committee of the town council on 20th December, councillors voted to pay £200 towards the construction of six new A4 car parking signs in a bid to emphasise that it is Westbury Town Council (and therefore its residents) that is paying for the free parking and not Wiltshire Council.
In many other Wiltshire towns, shoppers have to pay for all parking – even if they just want to stop for a few minutes, such as buying a newspaper. In a bid to support local businesses and promote shopping in the town, Westbury Town Council subsidise the cost of two hours’ free parking.
The issue was raised by former councillor, Ian Cunningham, that the signage that had previously been supplied by Wiltshire Council in the car parks ‘was poor’ and did not emphasise that it was Westbury Town Council providing the two hours of free parking.
Cllr Mike Sutton said, “This is to highlight the contribution that Westbury Town Council and its residents have made – they’re paying for it, not Wiltshire Council.
