New year jobs boost for Westbury

WESTBURY looks set to experience a boom in jobs, with new developments in the area bringing hundreds of opportunities for local people.

Between 70 and 85 jobs could be created by plans to build a new factory at the former cement works; up to 40 permanent jobs could be created at the proposed new waste treatment plant on the  Northacre Industrial Park, along with 150 temporary jobs during the construction process; while 12 new units are planned at the Woodland Industrial Estate, bringing new businesses to the area.

New factory at cement works

Tarmac, the UK’s largest supplier of construction materials, have announced plans to build a new manufacturing facility that could see between 70 to 85 full- time jobs created, along with associated indirect local employment opportunities.

The company, based at Westbury cement works, has submitted an outline planning application to Wiltshire Council for a new precast concrete manufacturing facility on the site of the old cement works and chimney, which was demolished in 2016.

Jonathan Toyn, senior estates manager at Tarmac said, “Tarmac’s Westbury site is ideally suited for a modern new manufacturing facility. A factory and stockyard area fits neatly within the operational footprint of the former cement works. Much of the site infrastructure is already in place, including a rail link, electricity substation, site services, offices, roadways and site security.”

200 jobs at the new waste plant

Around 200 jobs could be created by the new waste treatment plant on the Northacre Industrial Park, owned by  Northacre Renewable Energy – a company owned by Hills Group. Over 150 jobs would be created during the construction process, planned to start in the summer/autumn of 2018 for a 34-month period, and up to 40 permanent jobs will be available when the plant begins commercial operations in April 2021.

At the Westbury Area Board meeting last week, Ed Dodd from Hills Groups said, “This is a 25-30 year project, so there are careers in this, we’re talking about 30-40 jobs. There will be some serious engineering apprenticeships available. There will be maintenance jobs, people servicing the plant 24/7. So it’s a really positive story.”

More businesses moving to the area

Owners of Woodland Industrial Estate, HPH Commercial Property Ltd, have announced there are more units now available on the site just off Eden Vale Road in Westbury. The company has already received enquiries about the units and believe this could bring more businesses into the town and create more job opportunities.

Lindsay Holdoway, managing director of HPH Commercial Property said, “We have recently bought a site with 12 additional units at the Woodland Industrial Estate in Westbury. The units offer occupiers 800 to 10,000sq.ft of flexible storage, warehouse or industrial space in a central town  location.

“The site has stood empty since April of this year and we believe our investment in it will support local businesses and help drive job growth in the Westbury area. We have received very strong interest in the units and a number are about to go under offer.”
