A CONSULTATION to find out if local people want a war memorial back in the Market Place has closed.
551 people responded to the survey, via paper surveys in the town and through the town council’s website. 349 voted ‘yes’ and said they would like to see a memorial reinstated in the Market Place. 201 voted ‘no’, with 1 respondent undecided.
The result does not necessarily mean that the project will go ahead, but it will help the working group gauge public opinion as it considers the scheme.
The monument marking those killed in the two World Wars used to stand in the Market Place and was a popular gathering place for memorials and Remembrance events. It was removed in 1975 to make way for more car parking.
The current war memorial in Edward Street – the venue for the town’s well attended annual Remembrance service, would not be affected by any new monument.
