ONCE again, the people of Westbury have given generously to the Poppy Appeal, with over £6,500 collected in the town over the Remembrance period. The total is still set to rise with wreath money yet to come in.
Volunteers collected in Westbury’s Co-op and Morrisons, and there were also collecting boxes in shops in the town. This year, the collection on Remembrance Sunday was very successful, with £859 raised on the day.
Bill Prior, Poppy Appeal organiser for Westbury said, “We did well – we always do well in Westbury.”
The Poppy Appeal is the Royal British Legion’s biggest fundraising campaign. This year, they hope to break previous records with a national target of £42million and donations are welcome all year round. Last year, the Royal British Legion spent £90million on health and welfare; committed £30million on the Battle Back Centre (an adaptive sports and outdoor facility) and £20 million towards five personnel recovery centres (to assist wounded, injured, and sick service personnel). They also spent £20million running care homes and break centres as well as giving grants to organisations and individuals.
