WESTBURY Town Council is looking at revitalising the town by painting bollards, lighting columns, and benches in the High Street, as a way to improve the street scene and make the town centre more attractive.
The initiative was previously discussed by the town improvement group of the town council, with councillors agreeing that the painting of the bollards and street furniture was a high priority.
The cost of the project will be £14,578 in total and the money was approved at a meeting of the full town council on Monday 9th January. The theme will be black and gold, to tie in with the current street scene.
Speaking about the current street scene, cllr Gordon King said, “I have for some time been somewhat underwhelmed by the drab, poorly painted bollards, lighting stanchions and benches, which impact negatively on a street scene already desperately in need of reinvigoration.
“In all, there are about 30 pieces of street furniture that will be professionally painted black with gold trim, which will give all of these objects a new prominence and make the first positive step in becoming a positive influence on the street scene of the High Street and Market Place. Hopefully all works will be completed by the summer.
“Whilst the attention of the town vision group is currently occupied with the rotunda, the intention of this contribution is to make a subtle but positive impact on the street scene that will appeal to residents and visitors to our town alike.”
Westbury Town Council was previously given a £5,000 grant from the Westbury Area Board to go towards improving the town, and this was match funded by the town council to bring the total to £10,000. There is currently £8,000 left in the fund following previous street scene improvements, and as the cost of this project is £14,579, the town council agreed to pay the remaining balance (£6,579) at the full town council meeting.
