RESIDENTS are being encouraged to take free food from the town’s community fridge, regardless of your circumstance, as a way to reduce food waste.
Community fridge organisers say, “It may be surprising to hear that the adage, ‘if it sounds too good to be true it probably is’, does not apply to the community fridge!
“Comments continually made when volunteers ask our local community what they know about the fridge is ‘it’s for people who are struggling to make ends meet’. Whilst this is true of the food bank, run by Westbury Area Network, this does not apply to the community fridge.”
Westbury Area Network volunteers work with Westbury Town Council in operating the community fridge where the message is, ‘the fridge is there for everyone to stop food waste going to landfill’.
Organisers added, “Our local supermarkets have significant amounts of fresh food products and other products reaching their sell by date, which would be sent to landfill if they were not collected and distributed by the volunteers.
“All that is being asked of our community is for anyone, regardless of personal circumstances, to do their bit, however small, to help save our planet by coming along and using the produce available.”
The fridge operates from Westbury Community Project, off Eden Vale Road every Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday morning from 10-30am to 12pm. Organisers say for people to just come along with their carrier bags and take what they like.
