WESTBURY’S oldest war memorial was marked with its own poppy wreath thanks to members of the town’s heritage society.
The wreath was laid on the historic stone memorial in the churchyard of All Saints after the two-minute silence on Saturday 11th November.
The society, which runs the town’s museum in the library, is now gearing up for its Christmas celebrations, taking part in the Christmas market as part of Westbury’s Christmas celebrations on Saturday 2nd December. As well as offering books, postcards and bags reflecting the town’s heritage, the stall will also have calendars from the artist Eric Ravilious for sale and Christmas cards from national museums and galleries.
Star of the show promises to be a newly produced selection of Westbury mugs. Produced as part of a collaboration between the town council and the heritage society, the exclusive china mugs feature an artist’s impression of the town complete with white horse, station, mills and much more.
“We have had a great year in the museum with lots of visitors enjoying our varied exhibitions,” said heritage society chair Sally Hendry.
“Particularly popular was our photographic exhibition which had many people joining us to share their memories of Westbury past with its shops, streets and industries. We’ve been especially pleased to welcome pupils from local schools for special sessions looking at the town history, trying out the Victorian desks, handling cloth made in local mills and even trying their hand at shopkeeping with our Victorian till.”
Sally added that the society had planned a packed programme of walks, talks and exhibitions for 2024.
