THE work of the Laverton family was celebrated at Vista Court in Westbury last week when cllr Ian Cunningham took along the Victorian cup he gifted to the town to show the residents.
Vista Court, off Warminster Road, is owned by The Laverton Housing Trust. The trust was set up by William Laverton, nephew of Abraham Laverton, to build houses in Prospect Square for the people who worked for Abraham in the woollen mill industry.
The trust now owns just one of the initial houses in Prospect Square. As a result of selling the other properties in the square, the trust has developed 13 homes, specifically built for ease of living, in two locations close to the centre of town, Laverton Court (behind Westbury library) and Vista Court (off Warminster Road).
The original purpose still stands and these homes are inhabited by workers’ descendants or those with personal links to Westbury who meet the criteria of the trust.
Former mayor, cllr Ian Cunningham recently gifted a Victorian cup to the town, that once was presented to Abraham Laverton. Following the links to Vista Court, he visited on Friday 17th May and met with one of the oldest residents, Kathryn Cundick, who worked for many years at the mill. She is also the daughter of Phyllis Cundick, a founding member of the trust.
These homes are at times available to applicants over the age of 55. The residents have significantly lower monthly maintenance contributions compared to properties in the commercial sector.
The trustees invite applicants who would like to live in one of the homes in the future, to apply by sending your details in writing to: Mrs Margaret Hart, Secretary, The Laverton Housing Trust, 9 Westbury Road, Bratton, Westbury, Wiltshire BA13 4TE.
