RESIDENTS of Bratton, Edington and Dilton Marsh have been praised for embracing the national campaign, Great British Spring Clean by conducting litter picks in their local areas.
Cllr Suzanne Wickham, who represents Ethandune at Wiltshire Council, has thanked local people for getting involved with the campaign alongside her.
Cllr Wickham said, “I’ve always tried to go and help out in the village litter picks, as to me, it’s fantastic to see that people are so community-focussed that they will give up their own free time to help clean up and better their local area. I should mention, there’s also a good number of people who do this off their own backs throughout the year, without the Great British Spring Clean campaign, so a big thank you to those as well!”
As part of the campaign, Wiltshire Council sent the equipment, including the litter picking tools and bags, to the local villages and have also arranged to collect the rubbish bags after the litter pick.
Cllr Wickham added, “What we are seeing a lot of recently – and it is probably the biggest contribution to litter in the local area – is people littering as they drive through our villages. It’s becoming a real problem locally and it’s most likely not local people causing it. The real tragedy is that we spend a day cleaning just for someone else to throw a pizza box into the street the very next day.
“My main message is a big thank you to all those that helped clean up the villages but also to the general Great British public, please take your litter home with you!
“A special mention to the lady in Dilton Marsh, Angie Gibbs, who runs the litter pick like a military operation, she’s just brilliant!”
Cllr Wickham is encouraging people to report any issues such as fly tipping, on the Wiltshire Council app, MyWilts.
