THE Bank Holiday downpours didn’t dampen the spirits of rugby players across the South West as they convened at Knott Field for Westbury RFC’s first ever 10s tournament, which was a huge success for the club.
The club hosted a weekend of live music, food stands, stalls, bouncy castles and facepainting as well as a men’s tournament and a ladies’ tournament that saw nine men’s teams and four ladies’ teams join in with the friendly competition.
The men’s teams were: Trowbridge RFC 1, Trowbridge RFC 2, Honey Badgers, Warminster RFC, Aniers 7s, Drunken Donuts, Shredded Ducks, Dintons Barbarians Bath Rugby League and Westbury RFC.
The winners of the tournament were Shredded Ducks, who took home the Hill’s trophy with runners-up Aniers 7s. Player of the tournament was given to Callum from Dinton Barbarians.
The ladies’ teams were: Westbury Ladies, Ma’s Ba Bas, Swifts 7s and St Mary’s. The winners of the Hill’s trophy were Swifts 7s, with runners-up St Mary’s. Player of the tournament was given to Lauren from Westbury Ladies.
In the evenings, players and guests were treated to live entertainment from Peaky Blinders, Lazarus, Train to Skaville and Lix ‘n’ Stix.
Anna Hemingway, Ladies captain and organiser of the tournament said, “This was our very first tens tournament and it has been a huge success – from hosting men’s and ladies’ rugby teams from across the south -west to dancing and enjoying the Bank Holiday weather, with thanks for great music entertainment.
“The overall feedback from the teams who joined us was of surprise! As it was our first tournament, they were shocked that it ran so smoothly. Many of the teams have already signed up to return next year.”
The date has already been set for next year’s tournament for Friday 24th to Sunday 26th May. If you would like to enter a team or join them with entertainment or stalls, please email westbury rfcevents@ gmail.com to register your interest.
