Westbury entertained Thornbury in the latest West of England League Wiltshire and Gloucestershire Premier 2 Division hoping to build on last week’s win at home against Burbage and Royal Easton.
Westbury made two changes from the home win last week with Ben Whiting and Tom Lucas coming in for Sam Burdock and Luke Dilena.
Westbury won the toss and decided to bat first. They opened with Coles and Whiting and they made a bad start when the Westbury captain was out for 0 in the second over, caught by Luke Davis at slip with the total at 0. Mills then came to the wicket and both the batsman were immediately under pressure by the outstanding Thornbury bowling attack and after 20 overs Westbury had only accumulated 45 runs.
Then Westbury tried to attack the bowling but in doing so that they lost wickets at regular intervals. The lower order led by Senneck (34) eventually took Westbury to 153 all out in the 50th over.
When Thornbury batted they made a confident start but Westbury took 5 wickets for 66 and they must have thought of an unlikely win but they were frustrated by a fine sixth wicket partnership of 90 runs by Dan Lezar (70*) and Mangai (16*).
On this performance this Thornbury side are the most likely title winners but it may change in the next of weeks when all the top teams have to play each other..
