WESTBURY Junior School pupils embraced Pride earlier this month by holding a colour run, raising an impressive £600 for the LGBTQ+ charity Stonewall.
The pupils heard stories related to Pride and celebrated inclusivity during a school assembly and then took part in a colour run, organised by the Westbury Junior School Association.
Lauren Taylor, chair of the association, said, “The school association is a fairly new organisation here and we have been working really hard to bring back some fun activities for the children which they have missed out on since the pandemic. We decided to do a colour run to support our diversity curriculum, which focuses on Pride this month, and raise funds for the charity Stonewall.
“We’ve managed to raise £600, which has smashed our initial targets so we’re very pleased! It was important for us to support Stonewall and the work that they do because their ethos of equality and inclusivity is very much in line with our own core values – to respect, care and inspire. LGBTQ+ rights are human rights and if we can inspire just a little more care and respect in our children and the wider community, I truly believe we’ll leave the world a better place than we found it.
“The children had a wonderful day celebrating Pride month, spreading a message of inclusivity and having lots of fun. They took part in an assembly with some stories relevant to Pride, then Anna-Rose Darmon provided a fabulous musical warm up before the children ran around our field and were showered with powder paint by our lovely school association and staff.
“As the chair of the school association I’m incredibly proud of the event. Our staff and students have had an amazing day, raised funds for a really worthwhile cause and I’m very much looking forward to putting on more fun events.”
