WESTBURY is on the bottom of Wiltshire Council’s list for super fast fibre broadband.
The majority of the council’s installation of fibre broadband in the county will commence in 2013 or 2014.
But despite identifying Westbury as a ‘location for new strategic employment growth,’ Wiltshire Council won’t even start their project to install the new fibre network in Westbury until 2015.
Access to super fast fibre broadband was introduced to 5,500 business and residential properties in the Westbury area in February 2012, under BT’s commercial roll-out of fibre broadband. In spring 2014, BT’s commercial rollout of fibre broadband will be added to around 160 premises in Westbury – subject to planning and technical restraints.
But it won’t be until early 2015 that Wiltshire Council, in a programme in conjunction with BT and South Gloucestershire Council, will fill in the gaps and cover the remaining properties in the Westbury area.
Wiltshire Council says BT is responsible for the locations and timetable of the broadband roll-out. It adds that its priority is to get broadband to as many places in the county as possible.
Standard broadband operates at a speed of around 2 Mbps, super fast broadband can access speeds greater than 24 Mbps. Speed is an important factor as the greater the speed, the more advanced internet services residents can enjoy – such as live television and radio. If you have several members of the same household accessing the internet via laptops or smart phones, a superfast broadband connection can provide a good level of service to all of these users.
