PLANS for this year’s White Horse Soapbox Derby are currently being finalised and organisers say visitors can expect an “even steeper, longer and more gnarly course than last year!”
The free event, taking place on Saturday 18th May, promises a day full of fun for the family with plenty of racing and entertainment throughout the day along with food stalls, live music, games, and activities.
Westbury Town Council is hoping to use the top of the White Horse to host stall holders, entertainment and the big screen so people don’t miss a second of the action.
The Soapbox Derby proved to be extremely popular last year, with thousands of people from across the county coming to Westbury to see the brave competitors hurl themselves down the steep hill near the White Horse. There will be prizes for the quickest run, young champion and best historical theme.
This year’s kart theme is on wind power and renewable energy and the event has a new name of White Horse Soapbox Derby and STEM Fair (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths).
Ryan Child, event organiser at the town council, explained, “The event name has changed slightly so we can focus on the education side of things in the fair. We are going to have a wind power focus and are now open to submissions for traders and soapbox racers, with plans to have it on the White Horse – licenses pending.
“We are planning on having a vintage funfair, load of stalls and a recruitment section where people can look for local employment as well. So, from primary school projects all the way through to making soapboxes and then further education and jobs – we are giving people access to the full timeline of engineering and other employment.
“A STEM project for all primary aged children will soon be announced in partnership with our sponsor, Arke Ltd. This year’s event is in partnership with Landmarc Solutions with the gold sponsors Arke Ltd, MJ Church, TORN and English Heritage.”
Organisers added, “This year, the soapbox derby is also a celebration of wind power and renewable energy, as West Wilts is home to one of the largest engineering trading estates in the country, and we want to help inspire the next generation of climate conscious engineers. No doubt green solutions will be the focus of many industries going forward.
“The soapbox derby is not only a race, but also a festival of fun and entertainment for the whole family. There will be food stalls, live music, games, and activities for all ages. You can also enjoy the stunning views of the Westbury White Horse, a giant chalk figure that dates back to the 18th century. The White Horse is a symbol of Westbury’s history and culture, and a landmark that can be seen from miles away.
“If you want to be part of this exciting event, you can register now as a participant, a sponsor, or a trader. You can enter your own kart, or support your favourite team. You can also showcase your products or services, or simply enjoy the atmosphere and cheer on the racers.”
