WESTBURY town councillors have requested that the speed limit on the A350 past the Mill Brook development, on the Lidl side of town, be reduced from 40mph to 30mph.
This comes following a request by a resident in the area who complained about cars speeding along the road.
At a meeting of Westbury Town Council’s highways planning and development committee last week, cllr Mike Sutton said, “There’s no way the average speed will be more than 30mph on this road due to the placement of the roundabout, but all it takes is a few drivers being reckless for it to become an issue.
“When the Mill Brook development was first proposed here at this council, we suggested that the roundabout was in the wrong place and that the 30mph limit should be extended to the turning of The View, but that was turned down.”
Cllr Mike Naxton added, “That area has become a lot more popular recently thanks to the popularity of The View; we are now seeing a lot more people walk in that area when they wouldn’t before, so this may be a smart move.”
Councillors also suggested that the proposal to extend the 30mph limit may be accepted now as traffic is heavier in the area than it was before. It was also suggested that the pavement in that area is no longer fit for purpose and could be a potential hazard for anyone trying to use it, so slowing down speeding cars may reduce the possibility of an accident.
These proposals will be discussed by the local highway and footway improvement group of Wiltshire Council soon.
