Wed. 4th Dec. Wiltshire Shield Quarter-final Westbury United 0 Swindon Town 7
A minute’s silence was impeccably observed prior to kick off in memory of former player Aaron Salter, who recently passed away.
In freezing conditions and with fog only clearing just before the match, Westbury were faced with a very strong Swindon line up.
There can be no shame in losing 0-7 to a team of players all pushing to be selected in a League 2 title-chasing side. At times the visitors’ quick passing football was simply too good and to be admired. To their credit, United kept going right to the end and on another night would have scored a consolation goal.
Home keeper Ed Baldy had already saved twice before Norwich City loanee, Daillana Jaiyesimi, broke through to score the opener on 14 minutes. Westbury had a real go at finding a quick equaliser; Jamie Jordan tried his luck from long range, with the ball going a yard wide, then Joe Stradling saw his effort blocked after good work by JJ.
Town attacked straight after the Stradling attempt and the impressive Jaiyesimi set up Scott Twine, who doubled their lead on 24.
The game was effectively over on the half hour when another lovely move ended with Adam May’s finish. May then made it 0-4 before the break, although Baldy should have denied him. Swindon made a few substitutions at the interval and one of them, Ralph Graham, added the 5th soon after the restart.
United had a good spell with Ricky Hulbert’s stubbed effort forcing Luke McCormick into his only save of the match.
The introduction of brothers Demkiv provided fresh impetus and forced Town’s back line to work harder than earlier in the game.
Twine added his 2nd to make it 0-6 on 71, then almost notched a hattrick, but Baldy saved well.
The final goal was unfortunately a bit of a calamity in the home defence, Harry Parsons walked the ball in to add his name to the scoresheet.
