Westbury’s town centre post office, which has been closed since January 2023, is set to reopen in October under new management.
It will re-open at the same location, 30 High Street, and will be open for 60 hours a week.
The news has been welcomed in the town with mayor Jane Russ saying it will be ‘wonderful’ to have it back.
Westbury has been without a town centre post office since January of last year, following the closure of the Westbury McColl’s store. The closure occurred after the supermarket giant Morrisons, which acquired the McColl’s convenience store and newsagent chain in 2022, decided to shut down the Westbury location, including its post office, due to the store’s unprofitability.
A statement from the Post Office said, “We are delighted to let you know that Post Office services will be restored to the High Street Post Office on Wednesday 9th October 2024, at 1pm. The service will be operating from the same premises offering the same range of Post Office products and services.”
Services will include bill payment, cash withdrawals and foreign currency, postage, home shopping collections and returns, while customers of the main UK banks will also be able to access accounts.
Westbury’s Mayor Jane Russ said, “I am so delighted for the Westbury community that the post office is reopening. So many things are on-line these days but in reality, a post office is the heart of a high street and it will be wonderful to have it back. It will be a big boost to the Westbury community.”
MP Andrew Murrison said, “So pleased Westbury’s getting its post office back. A big well done to all involved.”
Antoinette Chitty, Post Office Network provision lead said, “We are delighted to soon be restoring Post Office services to High Street, Westbury, as we know how important a post office is to a community.”
