A WESTBURY town councillor has completed the gruelling Race to the Sun challenge, cycling through four countries in four days from Geneva to Monaco, to raise money for the Hearts and Minds charity.
David Anderson, who is a councillor for Westbury North, raised over £1,500 for Hearts and Minds, which aims to bring positive change to the lives of those affected by autism. All money raised will fund a family support service for children with autism and their families.
Starting in Switzerland and cycling 346 miles through France and Italy, before finishing in Monaco, the ride included some of the routes used by the Tour de France.
David said, “Having a son who is affected by autism, raising funds for Hearts and Minds and taking on the Race to the Sun Challenge seemed a great idea, and it was. You would think that I’d want to avoid my bike for a while but I actually can’t wait to get back on!
“Having arrived in Geneva we were reconciled with our bikes and equipment that had been transported for us.
“We set off on our four day adventure, taking in some breathtaking scenery and serious climbs with some equally serious descents, through Switzerland, France, Italy and finally Monaco.
“This was by no means a cycling holiday, the days in the saddle were long, and we were up at 6.30am each morning to ride again at 8.00am.
“The highlights for me was having the opportunity to ride with my dad, and the 13km climb up to Sestriere. The group of guys that we cycled with were fantastic and we became a close knit team.
“My thanks to the organisers from Hearts and Minds, Ian and Brendan, who ensured the routes were marked and provided us with support throughout the four days, ensuring we were fed and watered.
“If anyone reads this who is a keen on cycling, then I hope they will look at the website for the next challenges and raise some money for this extremely worthwhile cause.”
