WILTSHIRE charity Alzheimer’s Support is looking for walkers to take part and raise money for the dementia support charity in its annual sponsored walk on Saturday 11th June.
The 8.5-mile Walk to Remember starts in Warminster Park and takes in some of Wiltshire’s loveliest countryside as it leads up and around historic Battlesbury Camp hill fort. There is also a family-friendly Meadow Mile around the town’s lake and nature reserve that is suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs.
Duncan Baxter of Westbury, and his wife Lyn, are taking part in the meadow mile this summer. Duncan is a member of the Old Silk Works day club in Warminster and says the club has changed his approach to dementia.
Duncan said, “Being a member of the club has changed how I feel about dementia and my life. I have never felt so comfortable as when I’m at the Old Silk Works club and couldn’t be happier when I’m there.”
Meanwhile Lynn has made new friends at one of Alzheimer’s Support’s carers’ groups, which meet regularly to socialise and share experiences.
She said, “It’s been my lifesaver and I’ve learned so much from other carers about Duncan’s illness. Since joining the carers’ group I don’t feel so alone, and I’ve realised I shouldn’t worry so much. We all feel alone until we talk to one another.”
Alzheimer’s Support CEO, Sarah Marriott said, “We’re very grateful to everyone who has signed up for the Meadow Mile and Walk to Remember so far, but we need more walkers!
“We passionately believe in supporting people to live well with dementia through our day clubs, support at home, dementia advisers and activity groups. However, as a charity we would struggle to provide these services without the generosity of our fundraisers.
“As well as being a great day out for walkers of all ages and abilities, every penny raised from the Meadow Mile and Walk to Remember contributes towards our vital work. Just £25 could fund a support worker for an hour.
“We hope everyone who signs up will seek some sponsorship – they will be supporting people with dementia with each step!”
