Westbury police have issued a warning after children were seen playing on a frozen lake in the town.
Officers were called to the lake by Station Road on Tuesday 6th January after a member of the public reported children on the ice. The police attended to the lake alongside the fire service.
Inspector Lou Oakley said, “Officers attended along with the fire service and some strong words of advice around the dangers were given.
“The safety of young people is a priority for us. The recent cold spell will no doubt have led to many of our waterways freezing over, however, it is extremely important that parents speak to their children about the dangers involved when venturing onto frozen lakes or rivers.
“It may be tempting, but the ice will not be as solid as it looks.”
An incident in Solihull near Birmingham in 2022 saw four children die after falling through ice on a frozen lake while venturing onto it to feed ducks, highlighting the serious risks involved.
