“He came with Love”
You may well be good at throwing out things you no longer need, like a bit of paper with the phone number of you can’t remember who, but I’m not, so it was no surprise to me, when I was pondering what to write about in this WCT slot, to come across some words written by friends of mine in their 1989 Christmas card.
These words I felt were not only worth keeping but worth passing on, in these uncertain and troubled times, for their glimpse of hope and their offering of something to be glad about. They are words from a poem by an American Christian writer called Madeleine L’Engle in her book ‘The Ordering of Love’. The ‘He’ refers to Jesus Christ, in whom Christians see God our creator expressing himself in human form; the times it describes seem sadly familiar. I hope the invitation to Rejoice! brings you cheer.
He did not wait till the world was ready,
till men and nations were at peace ….
He did not wait for the perfect time.
He came when the need was deep and great…
To a world like ours, of anguished shame
he came, and his Light would not go out…
He came to a world which did not mesh,
to heal its tangles, shield its scorn.
We cannot wait till the world is sane
to raise our songs with joyful voice,
for to share our grief, to touch our pain,
He came with Love. Rejoice! Rejoice!
