WESTBURY cricket club has won the West of England Premier Cricket League’s Wiltshire Division for the first time in its history.
The first team were crowned victors after a game on the bank holiday weekend, when they beat Malmesbury by nine wickets.
The team, who lost only two out of 18 games all season, will be promoted to the Premier Two Gloucestershire & Wiltshire cricket league – the second highest tier of recreational cricket.
Team captain Alex Senneck told White Horse News, “We’re so pleased to have won the league and to have had all the hard work of the last two seasons result in such a great outcome.
“We’ve tried over the last two seasons to bring the club together, play local players who want to play for the right reasons and build a sustainable, not short term, model for the club.
“The majority of the team are Westbury boys who live in the town or went to school at Matravers and grew up in our youth system. This is an ethos that we hope to continue for years to come.”
Unbeaten since June, the team won with a convincing 267 points; 29 points ahead of second placed Marshfield. Westbury had the best record almost across the board in the league, with an unmatched 11 wins and the highest batting score and second highest bowling score.
Scorer and press officer for the team, Chris Lack said, “This was a fantastic and committed group of players who have got their just rewards on a fantastic unbeaten run that has lasted since the beginning of June.”
