A WESTBURY firefighter and his colleagues hope to raise £1,000 for the Fire Fighters Charity, having recently taken on the Tough Mudder challenge.
Andy Nash and two fellow firefighters from Frome Fire Station, Danny Barraclough and Darren Young, took on the South West Tough Mudder challenge in the black mountains of Wales recently.
Billed as ‘probably the toughest event on the planet,’ the event is a 12 mile long obstacle course designed by the special forces to test strength, stamina, mental grit, and camaraderie.
Andy said, “The course was awesome. There were many points around it that all three of us found very challenging. The course involved running through mud up to your knees for 13 miles, climbing 15 foot solid walls, electric shocks, carrying very large logs and one of your team over a mile, plunging into freezing metal containers full of ice to swim under a barrier, and more and more running, jumping swimming and climbing than I care to remember. But getting to that finish line, knowing that we had finished and managed to finish all together was fantastic and made it all worthwhile.”
Andy has been fundraising all year for the charity, which supports serving and retired fire service personnel and their families especially when then are in need.
Andy said, “So far we have managed to raise around £875. Our aim is to raise £1,000 if we can before the end of the year to help the Fire Fighters Charity as they are drastically low on funds. The charity is solely funded by what firefighters raise for them and the very kind and generous donations form the appreciative members of the public.”
