A WAR memorial, designed and made by a Westbury stonemason, has been unveiled in Tidworth.
The design, created by Nick Johnson from local stonemasons Young Johnson, has been erected in honour of fallen servicemen from Tidworth who have died in battle since 1914.
Nick, who has designed and made many other memorials across the UK including the Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment Memorial that was unveiled by the Queen last year, used the surroundings of Tidworth as inspiration for his design.
“The pinnacle of the memorial at the centre is inspired by the spire of a local church,” he said. “The eight monoliths represent Stonehenge, which is close to Tidworth on the A303. Each monolith is engraved with designs from local schoolchildren who entered a competition.
“On the back of the monoliths are pictures from the town from the 1800s to the 1900s. So there is a lot of history to take in when visiting the memorial.”
The memorial was officially unveiled on Saturday 2nd September with Nick, town officials and the community in attendance. “It was nice to do something for the town. It felt like people really liked it.”
The £130,000 black Indian granite tribute was made possible through a local fundraising campaign, sponsors and council grants.
