WESTBURY will mark Remembrance Sunday with a service this Sunday 9th November, but there will be no parade due to roadworks in the town.
The service, which usually begins with a parade beginning in the Market Place, will this year start with a congregation at the Edward Street war memorial at 10.30am, when the service will take place.
Chair of the Westbury branch of the Royal British Legion, Mary Kneen said, “We invite people to gather at the memorial before 10.30am, where Rev. Jonathan Burke will host the Remembrance Service.
“It’s a shame that we can’t hold the parade as usual, but with no guarantees that the route we use will be open or the road surface suitable, it just isn’t feasible. Our prime concern is the safety of all those who march. We were hoping it would be an extra special event this year because of the centenary, but we’ll have to do without the parade.
“However, we’re still looking forward to a special service; they are always well attended and the people of Westbury never fail to do us proud. The High Street has been packed in recent years and it’s a lovely tribute – please come and support us as you always do, to remember all those who gave their lives in conflict in the past 100 years.”
The service will run for approximately 45 minutes from 10.30am, and be followed by the wreath laying.
The Royal British Legion is also on the lookout for budding musicians to form a band to lead future parades.
