12th Jan. Dorset and Wilts Division 2 North Royal Wootton Bassett 3rd XV 10 Westbury 83.
Westbury at last were able to start the New Year after last week’s match against Melksham was postponed. This time Westbury travelled to league strugglers Royal Wootton Bassett 3rds and came away with an emphatic win, scoring 13 tries and 9 conversions totalling 83 points.
It sounds like the match was an easy win for the White Horse Men but Wootton Bassett worked hard and at times looked like scoring more tries than they actually managed.
The win came about because Westbury executed their attacking game plan well and when needed, the defence was solid. It was only in the last 10 minutes of the match, when Westbury were well in the lead, that perhaps they relaxed too much and allowed their opponents to score two well worked tries. This had the effect of sharpening up the team’s concentration for Captain Aaron Vaughan to lead by example and score the final try.
The majority of the tries were scored by the backs, with winger Jamie Dixon scoring four and skipper Vaughan two, with outside centre Dan Heatley two. Lee McClerg, Matt Inseal and James Catley-Day added one try each and forwards Chris Pearce and Ryan Knight chipped in to score one each.
Next week will be a much stiffer test when Westbury welcome Corsham 2nds to Knott Field.
