WESTBURY could have a new Community Arts Centre in the future – and your feedback is needed to help make the dream a reality.
Matravers School is looking at refurbishing a building on the school site to turn it into a Community Arts Centre to benefit residents of Westbury and the surrounding area, as well as students at the school.
However, in order to strengthen their application for funding, they need local people to show their support by e-mailing their comments so that the school can demonstrate community support in their application.
Matravers is a specialist arts college and already hosts a number of community arts events and workshops, not least as a central part of the evolving Westbury Music and Arts Festival. They are now looking to extend their enthusiasm for the arts with the centre that would help more projects and events take place.
Beverley Jessop, from the art department at Matravers explained, “We wish to develop our community arts provision at Matravers School. We value the opportunity to reach into the community and work on exciting projects over the last few years. We would like to offer further workshops, some advancing the skills already learnt and others to respond to requests from the community.
“These would take place ideally in a community arts space and gallery that would be open to all the community both during the week and at weekends for a variety of arts projects; workshops, artist exhibitions, clubs and information.”
The school is in the initial stages of applying for funding to help refurbish the building and create the centre, and needs evidence of local support to strengthen their application and increase their chances of success.
The school would like to know what type of workshops you would be interested in, and how a community arts building would be of benefit to you. You can e-mail your comments to bjessop@matravers.wilts.sch.uk
