Wiltshire residents can keep up to date with progress on the construction of a state-of-the-art waste treatment plant at Westbury following the launch of a new website www.northacrerrc.co.uk.The Northacre Resource Recovery Centre is the home of Wiltshire’s first mechanical biological treatment (MBT) plant which is due to be completed in summer 2013. Mike Webster, group director Hills Waste Solutions said, “Contractors have been on site since July last year and we are now at the point where it is possible to see things taking shape. The website is an easy way for those interested to be kept up to date.”The launch of the website coincides with the erection of the super structure steel frames which form the skeleton of the building. The website will give regular updates on the various phases of construction. It also explains the technology that will be used to divert 60,000 tonnes of household waste from landfill each year and turn it into a refuse derived fuel (RDF) which can be used to create energy. In May 2011 Hills Waste Solutions and Wiltshire Council agreed the 25 year contract for Hills to build and operate the multi-million pound Northacre RRC on Stephenson Road, Westbury. The project is a major investment by Hills into technology that creates a resource from waste. It also forms a key element of Wiltshire’s strategy to save the county millions of pounds in taxes by reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill. Pictured last week: the construction site.
