A 1948 OLYMPIC torch replica paid a visit to Westbury recently, taking a diversion from its coastal relay.
The 1948 Sailing Relay, organised by the Royal Yachting Association (RYA), sees the torch travel by water from Torquay to the Olympic sailing venue at Weymouth.
The torch had been visiting sailing clubs along the coast on its way, but with a gap in its schedule it made a special trip inland to the lake by the station in Westbury, where it was welcomed by the West Wilts Youth Sailing Association on Tuesday 19th June.
The torch was passed from member to member in a relay to the lake, with Mayor of Westbury, cllr Sue Ezra also taking part.
Then there were plenty of opportunities for members to have their photograph taken with the torch.
The 1948 Torch Sailing Relay is part of the RYA’s Sail for Gold initiative, which aims to bring the excitement of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games to sailing clubs and training centres across the country in the lead up to and during the Games, by looking at ways to inspire new and existing sailors to get out on the water, make clubs the focal point for members to join in the spirit of the London 2012, and maximise support for the British Sailing Team.
