Eighteen walkers set off on a clear but chilly day from Alfred’s Tower on an 8.5 mile walk led by Pippa Clarke.
Leaving the road they took a track through beautiful green-filled woods to a small lane, noting some people practising archery in the woods to their left. On reaching the next footpath they encountered the camp where the archery competition was based. The walkers were diverted to the regular footpath to avoid being a target and enjoyed the sheltered grassy path between the trees.
Crossing several fields they reached the small hamlet of Penselwood and headed south to the Dorset border. On noticing the sound of a bi-plane overhead they looked up and were treated to a fabulous aerobatic display. The group stopped for lunch on a grassy hill, enjoying the view. The route then took them through fields, woods and streams finally reaching the lane leading toward Stourton. Skirting the rear boundary of Stourhead the walkers began the long, slow climb back up towards Alfred’s Tower. A pleasant walk made even more enjoyable at this time of year with many wild flowers, blossom and trees bursting into life.
