Please observe Remembrance safely in your own homes

PLEASE stay at home to pay your respects on Remembrance Sunday, 8th November, and on Remembrance Day itself (11th) – that’s the message from Mayor, cllr Mike Sutton.

He has reminded everyone to stay safe and to pay their respects to the nation’s armed forces from the safety of their own homes.

The Royal British Legion has echoed the message to stay home and be safe.

Explaining this year’s change to Remembrance, cllr Sutton said, “In common with most other authorities across the country, under the current pandemic restrictions, Westbury will be holding a very different Remembrance Service on Sunday  8th November.

“There will be a very short service by the minimum of persons to mark the event at 10.55am and in keeping with the Covid-19 restrictions, the public are asked not to attend this year.

“We are hoping to be able to live stream  the ceremony so that it could be followed at home, rather than by attending, but should that be impractical due to conditions on the day, there will also be a video available on the council website.

“Arrangements have been made and agreed on the customary laying of wreaths and we would respectfully ask everyone to observe the restrictions for the benefit of everyone.”

Poppies in windows – a safe way to remember

The Royal British Legion says that in these unprecedented times, donations  from the public are needed more than ever. The organisation is also asking the public to mark Remembrance this year with a display of poppy posters in windows across the nation.

A poppy image, to be coloured in or decorated, can be downloaded from the Legion website for a donation.

The British Legion says, “You will be helping us support the most vulnerable in the Armed Forces community, be it older veterans that we care for, those suffering from social isolation, or those facing challenges associated with the Covid-19 pandemic.

“The Legion’s work is more vital than ever as we support people from all generations who have new hardships as a result of Covid-19.

“This Poppy Appeal, we want to ensure that everyone can still get their poppy, so we’ve developed an A4 poster of the iconic Remembrance Poppy that you can download, print, and display at home, perhaps in your front window.

“Make your donation to the 2020 Poppy Appeal, whether it is a one-off donation or a regular gift, and you’ll receive a link to download your Remembrance Poppy poster.”
