OFFERS of books for an elderly Westbury resident feeling isolated in the current lockdown because she cannot go to charity shops where she would usually buy them, flooded into a community Facebook group.
Over 30 people offered books or information about where the woman could still access them, with local people saying they would donate books themselves for free.
A home care company manager wrote, “I’m just wondering if anyone is able to help. I run a home care company and I have a lady in Westbury that isn’t able to get out because of Covid, and she’s becoming very isolated. She wants to get some books.
“Obviously the charity shops are all shut where she would usually go. Does anyone know anywhere that would be able to donate some books or maybe a mobile library? Any help would be great fully received.”
Somebody replied, “I have loads of books, we just need to know what she likes to read! Romance, thrillers biography. They will be out on my wall tomorrow but I would happily let this lady have some! I guess we need to find out what she may like.”
Another responder suggested, “The libraries offer a drop off service run by volunteers for this purpose. Drop her local library a line and they will assist.”
People also offered bags and boxes of books they could not currently take to charity shops.
The care home manager said she had collected some books and delivered them to her client – who she says “now has plenty to last her”. And she thanked everyone for their kindness.
