THE fabulous achievements of Westbury’s young people were celebrated at the special awards ceremony last week.
All nominees for the Westbury Young People’s Awards were invited to the awards evening on 19th June, creating an exciting atmosphere as young people, parents and sponsors awaited the results of the winners.
The awards, organised by Westbury Area Board, were sponsored by Martin & Co, Selwood Housing, Gooding Accounts, Tarmac, Hire Standards, Hills Waste, Places Leisure, Sovereign Housing and White Horse News.
From sporting, arts, caring, leadership, voice and school council achievements, the young people of Westbury were celebrated for their work across the last year.
All nominees were presented with a certificate from Westbury and Warminster’s community engagement manager, Graeme Morrison, who compered the evening, and a video showed the audience of each of their achievements. Each sponsor then revealed the winner and presented them with a trophy. The winners were:
• Young sports team award, presented by Luke Hames of Martin & Co to Matravers CCF Ten Tors Team.
• Young carer award presented by Mary Cullen of Selwood Housing to Shannon McGinn.
• Young sports individual award presented by Sam Gooding of Gooding Accounts to Harry Humphries and Jay Able (joint winners).
• Young leader award presented by Andy Wright of Tarmac: Leighton Dyer.
• Young arts group award presented by Colin Larrigan of Places Leisure to ALW Dance competition team.
• Young volunteer award presented by Peter Andrew of Hills Waste to Hannah Down.
• Young arts individual award, presented by deputy mayor, cllr Sheila Kimmins to Molly Staffer.
• School council award presented by Matt Rowe of Hire Standards to Isabella Carpenter
• Young voice award presented by Scott Jacobs-Lange of Sovereign Housing to Team 10.
• Young achiever award presented by Lauren Balchin of White Horse News to Lucas Wint.
• Special Area Board Award presented by chair of Westbury Area Board, cllr Gordon King to Aiyana, Elysia and Leyton Scott.
The audience was treated to performances including pieces from Matravers senior choir, Bitham Brook choir, Matravers dance students and Matravers drama students.
Graeme Morrison said, “The achievements of all of the young people nominated deserve to be recognised and this wonderful evening was a fitting way to do so. Congratulations to all of the people who took home a trophy on the night and a huge well done to everyone who was nominated – you really are all winners.
“I would like to say a huge thank you to Matravers School for hosting the event. Also the event would not be possible without the support of our sponsors.”
