As a photographer, Sam has covered a wide range of issues across the Middle East including the wars in Syria and Iraq and the refugee crisis in Lebanon, Jordan and Turkey.
He has documented the rise and fall of Isil, from the terror group’s capture of Mosul in 2014 to its final capitulation in Syria earlier this year.
His work has been featured in The Telegraph, The Guardian as well as international publications including the New York Times, Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal.
One of Sam’s images was chosen this month by the British Press Association to feature at an exhibition of the ‘Best of British Press Photography’ from the last few years at the Bargehouse Gallery in central London. It was available to view from Friday 17th to Sunday 19th May.
The image captured civilian children in Syria fleeing from the Islamic State’s last remaining territory.
Speaking to White Horse News, Sam said, “It’s an honour to be displayed alongside such a strong body of work and I’m really pleased my image was chosen.
“The image (pictured) was taken earlier this year during perhaps one of the toughest jobs of my career so far, spending almost a month and a half in Northern Syria, documenting the last days of ISIS’s “caliphate” there.
“Syria is a long way from Westbury but I always remember my time at the White Horse News, where thanks to the patience of editors Ian and Sue Drew, I was able to learn so many valuable lessons.”
