WESTBURY was filled with red, white, and blue last weekend as the town celebrated the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in style.

Celebrations took place across the country and Commonwealth to mark the Queen’s 60 years as Monarch, and from a street fayre to the lighting of the town’s beacon, there was a host of celebrations in Westbury and the surrounding villages.
Schools started off the festivities on Friday 1st June, with children dressing up for the occasion and taking home commemorative souvenirs. With fairground rides, inflatables, side stalls, a climbing tower and water walker, food and craft stalls, street entertainers, pony rides, the chance to meet some exotic animals, and much more, Saturday’s biennial street fayre proved as popular as ever.
Further entertainment took place on Monday evening when Queen tribute act The Great Pretender took to the stage in the Market Place. Other events included a tea party, combined church service, and children’s fancy dress party. Villages hosted their own celebrations, with fetes, picnics, competitions, scarecrow walks, and games all part of the fun and frivolities.
Westbury mayor Sue Ezra said, “The fayre went down very well, we’re very please everybody came out and enjoyed themselves, and the people that were there with stalls were really pleased too. It was busy all day, even at 4pm people were still about!”
It appears that the Jubilee celebrations in Westbury have surpassed those in many neighbouring towns. Cllr Ezra said, “It would usually be the street fayre this year but with the Jubilee we were determined that we would make this a big event. It’s been great that the youngsters have been involved a lot too; it’s not just been for the older generation.”
The six decades were reviewed in music and film on Saturday evening, while Westbury’s very own Jubilee anthem was performed at the Diamond Jubilee Concert.
