CROWDS turned out in force in Westbury over the weekend to enjoy the stalls, street entertainment and celebrate the annual Christmas lights switch-on.
Hundreds of people gathered on a chilly Saturday to be wowed by a whole host of entertainment from dance groups, live music and comedy sketch shows.
The event was organised by Westbury Town Council and Leander Morales. The lights were switched on by Oscar Bailey, winner of this year’s Christmas card design competition.
Following on from the successful community video last year, where residents, schools and businesses wished the town a Merry Christmas, another video was made and premiered during the evening on the big screen. This year saw Westbury schools sing the iconic Christmas song, Happy Xmas (War is Over).
Mayor of Westbury, cllr Mike Sutton said, “Wow! Just when we thought it would be difficult to match last year’s Christmas lights ‘switch on’ in Westbury, the event on Saturday turned out to be just as successful. On a bitterly cold day and evening it was heartening to see the numbers that gradually built up throughout the day and were present for the entertainment, culminating in the ‘switch on’ at 7pm.
“For those present, it will be a long time before we forget the singing and laughter as we sang ‘We Will Rock You’ and the antics of those on stage and to see children and adults laughing and singing in the cold, reminded us of what is so special about this time of year.
“It was not just about the closing ceremony though and visiting the stalls in the parish hall and outside, I was struck that most were by local people, and what talent we have in our town and their commitment to community events such as this. I would like to thank them all, along with those shops and businesses who decorated their shop fronts with seasonal decorations to add to the festive spirit.
“I would also like to thank Leander Morales for yet again working with the town to produce another stunning round of acts; and of course the entertainers who performed so admirably in the cold. I must also thank the staff at Westbury Town Council who worked from early morning until late at night to ensure all went smoothly on the day and my fellow councillors who were present throughout the day; but my biggest thanks must go to the people of Westbury who showed yet again what a thriving community we have in our town. Well done Westbury!
“And a very Merry Xmas to everyone!”
