CHRISTMAS will officially be welcomed in Westbury next weekend at the town’s hugely-popular Christmas lights switch-on event which will see a wide range of exciting attractions including a concert full of special performances, a Santa’s grotto and a winter market – all taking place on Saturday 2nd December.
Westbury Mayor, cllr Mike Sutton, is encouraging people to come to the event to enjoy ‘an early Christmas feeling’.
“Christmas is approaching and even sooner is the acclaimed Westbury Lights switch-on,” he said. “In these difficult times with the cost-of-living and worldwide events, it is an opportunity to visit stalls, watch various events, see Santa and generally enjoy that festive feeling.
“Naturally for this time of year, some events are for children to enjoy, but there is much for adults as well and we hope everyone can experience an early Christmas feeling at the event. It is of course dependent on the weather, but everyone in Westbury and beyond is invited to come and visit and share a community experience.”
The Christmas lights will be switched on at the earlier time of 5pm.
The event will start with a winter market in the High Street where people can pick up stocking-fillers from an eclectic mix of traders, as well as a funfair, plus entertainment from circus stilt walkers, the Bratton Silver Band and local choirs.
Residents can expect to be entertained by an array of special musical performances – including one of the leading UK Queen tribute bands, Flash, who will be supported by local acts The Sad Dad Club and Sour Apple, while talented young artists from Matravers School will be performing throughout the afternoon.
Dangerous Dave’s puppet show, as seen on CBBC, will be performing at 1.15pm in the Market Place, followed by performances by the town’s dance groups until 3pm. Santa is expected to be at his grotto for 3.30pm and he will be on stage with the winners of the Christmas card competition before the lights switch-on at 5pm.
Some of the food traders at the event include Hickory Henry’s Smokehouse, Dogs on Wheels, Raymondos, The Cosy Kitchen, Sugar and Slice, The Espresso Lab, Decanter Bar and Prosecco Palazzo.
