THE skate park at Penleigh Park has a new look thanks to the hard work by Westbury Youth Club members who helped respray the skate ramps to give the area a new lease of life.
Last year, the Westbury Youth Club organised a community event where the multi-area games area (MUGA) in Grassacres Park was resprayed, and following the success of this, the youth club organised for the skate ramps also to be resprayed.
The work was made possible thanks to a grant from Westbury Town Council, and on the day members of the council, Wiltshire Council, Team10 (the community youth group from Westbury Junior School), local residents and 4Youth (youth outreach workers) all helped out under guidance from Bristol based artist Tom Miller.
Beth Mullins, leader of the youth club, said, “We identified that the skate ramps in Penleigh Park needed to be freshened up and resprayed due to wear, fading and unauthorised graffiti being added over the years.
“After speaking with the artist Tom Miller, who helped with the MUGA, he agreed to come back and do the skate ramps. Youth club members and Team10 worked hard the two weeks before to ensure the ramps were covered white and ready to be resprayed. On the day 4Youth, Team10, Westbury Youth Club, Westbury Town Council and Wiltshire Council all came together to hold the Penleigh park stake ramp respray.
“We had music, a BBQ and refreshments and around 60 young people attended and helped spray on the new design with some young people spraying over 20 times under the direction of Tom. Tom returned to the site a few days later to touch up and finish off the project. Team10 and Westbury youth club applied the topcoat of anti-vandal varnish that week which was donated by Team10 and Westbury Youth Club.
“We have to say a huge thank you to Team10, Westbury Town Council, 4Youth Westbury, Wiltshire Council, the local residents, the youth club members and team, the artist Tom Miller but most of all to everyone that came along to help. We were overwhelmed with the results, and we hope that it brightens up people’s day as they walk through Penleigh Park just as it did ours.”
