A GROUP of Westbury people came together to tidy up their neighbourhood over the Christmas period.
Residents from Slag Lane joined town councillor David Jenkins to pick litter in the area.
Cllr Jenkins said, “The litter pick was a great community effort and thanks must be given to all those who participated and helped organise the event.
“The 10 large bags of litter collected contained things like paper, food packages, tins, plastic bottles, broken glass, cigarette packets and stubs and, most alarmingly, an open can of waste oil. In the summer especially, litter can be a source of health hazard.
“I was amazed at the amount of litter collected. It’s disappointing that some people don’t care about dropping litter in public places and are quite happy to disregard items, making the area unsightly and depending on someone else collecting it.
“I understand that if you drop litter, even chewing gum, you could be subject to a fine; not having a bin to hand is no excuse for littering.
“Westbury is a great town and to help keep it litter-free would be quite an achievement, but I’m sure with community effort it could happen.”
