Visitors to Vivash Park are being urged to take greater care by Westbury Town Council following the death of a young swan caught in discarded fishing line.
In December, the young swan was found injured and entangled in fishing line. Despite the intervention of Wiltshire Wildlife Hospital, the cygnet had ingested the line, and its injuries were so severe that it had to be euthanised.
A council spokesperson said, “Westbury Town Council is deeply upset and dismayed to report yet another tragic incident involving a cygnet being caught in discarded fishing line at Vivash Park. The incident happened in December, and Wiltshire Wildlife Hospital was called to assist the injured bird, but sadly, due to the severity of its injuries and the fact that it had ingested fishing line, the decision was made to euthanise the cygnet.”
The council highlighted the importance of Vivash Park as a sanctuary for wildlife. “We are committed to preserving this haven and ensuring the safety of the animals that call it home,” they added.
Residents and visitors are being asked to use the bins provided at each fishing peg to dispose of fishing line responsibly. “This simple action can help prevent further harm to our wildlife. We also encourage visitors to remind others of the importance of keeping the park free from litter and dangerous debris,” the spokesperson said.
“We ask for the cooperation of all who enjoy Vivash Park to help us maintain this important sanctuary for generations to come.”
The council commended its team of volunteers and staff, who regularly check the lake and surrounding areas, and confirmed their ongoing commitment to prioritising the safety of wildlife and the health of the lake.
