The deadline for the decision on controversial plans for 41 homes on the edge of Westbury is approaching, but it’s likely to be extended.
The plans, which would see the development of land on the northern side of Bratton Road, have sparked considerable debate. This area has long been eyed for potential development, but previous proposals have been rejected by both Wiltshire Council with the town council also raising objections.
Revised plans were submitted by Mitchell Eley Gould in 2024, expanding on the original proposal for 41 homes. The revised plans highlighted the site’s proximity to green space and its short distance from Westbury’s town centre. A ‘spine road’ was also included, designed to ease traffic congestion.
Wiltshire Council’s website currently lists a decision deadline for the planning application of 4th April. However, this is expected to be extended to allow for further consultation.
Nic Thomas, director of planning at Wiltshire Council, said, “This planning application remains under consultation and the decision deadline is likely to be extended to allow for issues to be addressed. The application will be considered in accordance with relevant policies and legislation.”
Objections submitted by residents in response to the proposals include fears over capacity issues at local doctor surgeries, concerns about road safety near the proposed development and the potential impact more houses would have on local wildlife.
Other Westbury residents pointed to the town’s White Horse and how a development near the site could take away from the beauty spot.
One resident wrote, “As one of the most iconic and historically significant landmarks in the region, the Westbury White Horse represents not only the rich heritage of our community but also the cultural identity of Westbury. The development of 41 houses in such close proximity to this historic site would have a detrimental effect on its preservation, visibility, and surrounding landscape.”
Meanwhile, Andrew Murrison MP echoed this point in his objection, which reads, “I object to the application because it is for house building on a green field site in open countryside. In particular, I note the encroachment it would make on the amenity of the adjacent Bratton Camp and the damage that would be caused to the setting of the Westbury White Horse.”
