DETAILED plans have emerged for the new housing estate on Trowbridge Road for the first time since the Government overruled Wiltshire Council to allow the development.
Britain’s biggest housebuilder, Barratt Developments, has applied to build 300 new homes after Wiltshire Council turned down the development in principle in 2015.
Outline planning permission was given by a Government inspector and the council will now be expected to decide whether Barratt’s detailed proposal is suitable.
The outline plans, first revealed in 2014, upset Westbury residents and councillors who felt the town couldn’t cope with more houses. Over 200 are currently being built just across the road from this site, at White Horse View near The Mead.
People have begun to object to the new application, too, and one resident said in a comment to Wiltshire Council, “Seriously! More houses! The impact on our natural environment is becoming irreparable.
“Not only that, the surrounding roads are not designed for the increased amount of traffic this will bring. Also, where will these families send their children to school [..] Where will these families see a doctor? [..] The infrastructure for all these houses just isn’t there!”
The proposed development will contain a mix of properties ranging from one bed apartments to four bed houses, and 90 ‘affordable’ units.
Access to the estate would be from a new roundabout built on Trowbridge Road between Bitham Park and the railway bridge.
Another resident wrote to Wiltshire Council and said, “There is already a roundabout at Bitham Park, just south of the intended new roundabout and that already causes some delays for HGVs. An additional roundabout within a few hundred yards could lead to considerable additional delays for all traffic.”
