Tues. 2nd Oct. Toolstation Premier Div. Westbury Utd 1 Roman St Glass 0
Westbury and Roman Glass served up an entertaining match on the first cold night of the season.
With a clear sky and temperatures firmly into single figures, some supporters were caught out with their summer jackets on.
Westbury were on top of the early exchanges but it was Glass who had the first dangerous attack, a fierce shot low to Baldy’s right, Baldy was equal to it and got down to save and hold onto the ball.
Six minutes later Callum Demkiv was on target to give Westbury the lead, Sammy Jordan flicked the ball onto Demkiv who was racing clear, then as the angle tightened and the defender closed, Demkiv unleashed his low shot through a gap that no-one else in the ground could see, past the keeper into the net.
Ryan Bole had a strong finish to the first half; a free kick from a central position about 35 yards out was well struck but the keeper managed to push it wide for a corner, followed by another free kick from the wide left position which he swung in at a great height but it just evaded the heads of Sammy Jordan at the near post and Matt Jones at the far post.
The second half was ‘backs to the wall’ as the momentum swung in favour of Roman Glass. Dan Jordan and Jones were on hand to tackle, kick, head, block, whatever was needed to keep the ball away from the Westbury goal. There was a few good chances for Westbury on the break, especially when Sammy Jordan broke clear and was bundled down in the box as he was about to pull the trigger. Shouts for a penalty were waved away by the referee.
Glass thought they’d equalised just before the 80 minute mark, but the linesman’s flag was held aloft to signal an offside. Westbury continued to battle and try to hit on the break but the score remained 1-0 when the referee blew the final whistle on an entertaining encounter.
