FAIRFIELD Farm College (FFC) hosted a large Santa Dash on Wednesday 6th December that saw nearly 300 people take part wearing various costumes from Santas and elves to Christmas jumpers and hats.
Organiser and PE tutor at the college, Rachel Bown said, “The Santa/Elf Dash was a huge success! In total, including FFC students, nearly 300 young people with additional needs took part. They were representing 23 schools and colleges from across Wiltshire and had 112 supporting adults. We also had 7 FFC sports leaders and 16 Lavington School sports leaders – this must be some kind of SEND extra-curricular activity record.
“The aims of the activity were totally achieved: To engage pupils with additional needs in a new activity; To organise an inclusive event where all pupils can work at their own level; To challenge society’s perception of what children with additional needs can achieve; To have a lot of fun whilst being active.
“Every student, whatever their age or ability, was invited to wear a Christmas outfit. This could be an elf suit, a Santa suit, a Santa hat and gloves or an outfit of their choice. They then participated in the activities, enjoyed a Christmas biscuit (made by FFC catering students) and a drink and went back to school with a special medal and a big smile!
“The feedback I have received so far has been great. One pupil told me “this is the best day of my life!” I have also had messages from parents who were totally thrilled by the photos and very grateful their child had been included.
“All the sports leaders had a fun time too and are totally inspired to organise and deliver more events for children who find PE tricky.
“Organising an event on this scale is not easy. It takes a lot of time and collaboration, so I would like to thank Lavington School and the FFC team for supporting me and my idea and for helping me create some Christmas magic for a large group of young people and their families. Happy Christmas!”
The students at Fairfield Farm College were kindly sponsored by Mendip Developments which allowed them to take part in the activity all dressed in costumes.
