Wiltshire Fire & Rescue Service has taken over part of Westbury’s visitor centre for two months to promote home fire safety checks.
The High Street facility currently has a window display and other material on show, highlighting the importance of safety in the home.
Local people will now be able to request a home fire safety check via the centre, and there will also be information available about becoming an on-call firefighter in Westbury.
It is the first time that the Service has mounted a display of this type in West Wiltshire, and the idea came from discussions with both the Westbury Area Board and Westbury Town Council.
Partnership & community engagement manager Michael Franklin explained, “I regularly attend the Area Board meetings, and it was through one of these that the idea was raised of a local display.
“The Heritage Society very kindly offered us space in their building, and we are delighted to have this opportunity to bring potentially life-saving information to the Westbury community in a new way.”
The Mayor of Westbury, Cllr David Bradshaw officially opened the display on Tuesday 12th May.
In addition to the information on show at the visitor centre, two ‘spotlight’ events are planned for Saturday 30th May and Saturday 20th June, when the Westbury fire engine will be parked in the High Street between 10.00am and 1.00pm. This will be a chance for people to chat directly with local firefighters about all aspects of the Fire & Rescue Service.
