AGE UK Wiltshire is teaming up with the Mad Hatters Tea Rooms in Edward Street, Westbury, to provide a regular afternoon Drop-in Café Club. Starting on 20th June the doors will be open from 2pm to 4pm every Wednesday.
Any retired person living in the Westbury area is very welcome. Couples or groups of friends may wish to come, but it is especially hoped to encourage people who may be living on their own and those who are looking for some company away from their own home.
As well as enjoying a cup of tea or coffee and a piece of cake at a special offer price, there will be an opportunity to make new friends, share in some good conversation and have a stimulating afternoon. Conrad and Julia of the Mad Hatters Tea Rooms will also be providing a weekly raffle prize.
There is no set format for the afternoon, as Jane Duke from Age UK explains. “It is for those who come to decide – but a pair of ‘listening ears’ will always be to hand, together with a pack of cards, a set of dominoes and some other board games for those who would like the challenge of a game,” she said.
During the summer months two special sessions will also be run by Age UK’s ‘Fit as a Fiddle’ project coordinator, Sally. The first, on the 27th June, will give people a chance to try out a variety of exercises for keeping fit from the comfort of their chair. On the 1st August, Age UK’s Sally and Conrad from Mad Hatters will be demonstrating nutritional food ideas which help to maintain health and physical wellbeing with tasting opportunities, and recipes to take home.
“Sometimes it is not easy to go into a café on your own, but from now on in Westbury on a Wednesday afternoon there will always be a welcome,” added Jane. Picture: Conrad and Julia Burrows of Mad Hatters serving a cup of tea to Sally Evans and Jane Duke of Age UK Wiltshire
