WESTBURY young people are being encouraged to pick up a spray can and get creative as the Westbury Youth Club, in collaboration with Westbury Town Council, are letting kids try their hand at graffiti and respray the multi-use games area (MUGA) at Grassacres Park.
The event is open to all, and will take place on Saturday 4th June 10am to 4pm, complete with refreshments kindly donated by Morrisons and even a BBQ on the day.
Beth Mullins, leader of Westbury and Warminster Youth Club, said, “Westbury Youth Club is the young people of Westbury’s club and each year the youth club asks its members what they would like to see and do. Last September they said they would like to try their hand at graffiti – this is something that no one in the team had any experience with, but we were able to source a Bristol based artist who could show us the ropes, Tom Millier.
“When asked about the idea he said he’s happy to come along and do a session with the club’s members but it would be spraying cardboard and not walls. Myself and the trustees thought although this is what the young people have asked for it’s not very hands on.
“We spoke to the town council and what started out as the members’ idea has turned into a free event for every young person in town (you don’t have to be a club member to join in with this event) with us, 4youth outreach, and Team10 of Westbury Junior School working together so that the MUGA in Grassacres Park will be resprayed.
“Tom is coming from Bristol and will be in the park 10am to 4pm teaching young people how to graffiti, making the MUGA look back to its former best as it’s currently tatty and faded. The event is free, supported by Westbury Town Council and Westbury Area Board of Wiltshire Council. Due to a large number of people expected we will have a system in place to ensure everyone gets a chance who wants to do some graffiti. The event is aimed at the young people of Westbury, so they will get priority as it’s their day.
“We would like a local sponsor for the event; this will allow us to be able to display banners as promotion for the event and on the day. If anyone is interested or can help, please contact Beth via westburyyouthclub@gmail.com or pop along to a session on a Wednesday evening 6pm to 7:30pm term time at Westbury Community Project, on Eden Vale Road.”
